Week 1 : Nate Kaeding makes San Diego cry.

According to McKee "the public sphere is a useful metaphor because it lets us think about the role that ordinary people might play in creation of public culture." (page 10) You would have thought the would of sports ended as you know it on Sunday January 17, 2010. This is how it seemed to others as I opened my Facebook application on my Iphone and read the posts my friends were leaving.
I myself was not able to watch the game, but reading the updates every couple hours or so kept me entertained. One post showing a friends triumphant skills at putting together her own travel barbecue along with carefully placed coals during celebration before the big football game Chargers vs Jets. Hours later she, along with other friends of my wife and I, posted comments that read "San Diego Super Chargers”, “Playoff time shirt. Let's keep the win streak (currently 11-0) going through Superbowl XLIV!!!”, and “Go Chargers!” Comments like this make me assume these people are so into the team and are beaming with pride! Not until around 4:45 p.m. do I learn that the game is intense, and a few minutes later it all goes downhill from there. Posts like “I hate this game! Damn it!” and “Disappointment. Nate Kaeding. Arghhhhhhh” give me the idea of who is to blame and to do some investigation on what had happened. This is a highlight post I found on YouTube that shows exactly why all these people went from angry to upset in a days time.
What is my fascination and other people’s with constantly being updated by other people’s post as opposed to calling them on the phone to ask how they are doing? Am I really becoming socially like a hermit and unable to being social or do I feel as though I already know from right there reading the post and don’t feel the need to call since, obviously, I already know what is going on in their life?

After all was said and done, this picture is most of what my Facebook friends opinion of Nate Kaeding. (He missed 3 field goal attempts).
