week 4: the lost boys

The lost boys are still in many ways a mystery to us today. With the trauma and journey that many of them endured, it is surprising to find that they are able to acclimate to life in the United states. It is interesting to find that the migration of the lost boys was halted after 9/11 for a short period because of national security fears, but then carried on shortly after. The boys were young and ranged in age from three to eighteen. (http://www.mtholyoke.edu/~czerw20m/lostboys/lostboys.html) The journeys that they endured are shocking and each have a story that is overwhelming in what they survived traveling to Ethiopia for their safety in the midst of a brutal, bloody war.
I'm ashamed to admit that I had never even heard of these young men and the situation going on over in Sudan due to sheer ignorance. The issues discussed in the book and those which we are now brushing on in class are very interesting to me as I become educated about the astonishing story of these young men and what they have endured.

  1. I, too, had never heard of the Lost Boys. It's a shame that the media doesn't show stories of the Lost Boys. If they do, they must be little fillers and they don't stress it enough.
