Week 6: Writing Techniques by Eggers

As a writer, I've found it interesting throughout the novel how Eggers writes the narrative. We have discussed his invocation of breaking down the third wall and addressing the reader through Valentino: pointing out how he has to lie in order to get your attention. Based upon the material, it is easy to see just how effective this format is. One of the best examples, in my view, is on p. 249 when the Sudanese woman has her picture taken and he takes an aside to talk about and question just how many people would like to have their story told and instead have someone else telling it for them. This emphasizes how important the novel is that we are reading. We are reading about someone who has had that opportunity. He is using Eggers to reach that end, his story on his terms. As I've begun my critical response paper on this topic, I've been very impressed by these tools that he uses as a writer. The truth behind each lie is humbling and appealing all at the same time.
