As I begin to approach my final paper i am incorporating a number of public sphere concepts into my paper. I will be taking a post-modernist approach in pointing out how Eggers' use of fractionalization and trivialization are particularly effective in "What is the What". Eggers uses the personal testimony of those affected by the crisis in Sudan and, using Valentino, gives the voice of the people the forefront in doing so. A non-fiction biographical approach would not work in drawing attention to the issues that the novel intends to shed light on. The novel is instead intended to be a call to action. There is a conscious effort by the writer and the narrator to involve the reader enough in the issues that they will feel inspired to take action and become a part of a positive change of some sort. Valentino expresses in the story how many of the people involved don't get the chance to tell their story but instead have it told for them. Eggers has done a wonderful job of giving the people a voice and diving into their personal experiences in order to fully understand the issues.
