There are so many concepts that I can draw from McKee to relate back to Egger's What is the What, but the one that really stood out to me is Commercialization(sensationalism). This will be the concept I will be focusing on within my paper. What is the What was such a great novel and the way that it was narrated really captured the essences of the Lost Boys story. I believe the way the that Eggers set up this project was amazing, and it really grabbed my attention. This brings me to the sensationalism aspect McKee was talking about. The public sphere is based around finding a topic that will cause the audience to react. Whether it is trash, funny, heartbreaking, etc. the story requires something that will catch the eye or ear. For instance the picture above really doesn't have anything to do with my post, but it catches the readers eye and draws them in. This is something that Egger's incorporates within his novel, but his technique is based on how he uses the narrative. In Egger's novel he had to incorporate a way to write Valentino's story, but do it in a way that will keep the audiences attention, but also cause the readers to have a reaction.
I agree with you and I am writing about the same thing in my paper. The sensational has its place and no doubt brings results. In a society obsessed with news venues like TMZ and the National Inquirer, it is important to grab the attention of the reader. Eggers novel definitely does so by sensationalizing stories and drawing the consumer in to want more. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteExactly, Eggers goal *as well as Deng* was to stir up emotions in the audience and through sensationalism Eggers did this. Throughout the story I was hooked. Good luck to you as well!
